The first game of the season for the Winfield Middle School eighth grade girls squad was against Clearwater on Dec. 3. Taylor Byerley also had a big game, scoring nine points. Bailey Phillips added in six.  Each player for the Vikings scored a basket and shared the ball well.  Ashley Smith, Abby Cantrell, Marissa Ramirez, Kirstin Cummings and Brendetta Smith each put up points.

The next game, Dec. 5, was against Wellington. The Vikings didn’t fare as well, losing with a score of 42-16.  Taylor Byerley scored six, while Isabella Hunt and Abby Cantrell each recorded four points.

Winfield took on Rose Hill Dec. 9, coming up short in a hard-fought game by a score of 27-20.  Taylor Byerley scored six points, while Ashley Smith and Abby Cantrell each recorded four points.

The eighth grade A team took on Ark City Dec. 12 and came out victorious with a 38-36 overtime thriller.  Ashley Smith hit the shot to tie the game up at 36 and then made the eventual game-winning basket in overtime. Marissa Ramirez finished with a team high 10 points. Abby Cantrell added seven and Isabella Hunt six, and Bailey Phillips and Ashley Smith both finished with five points each.

The eighth grade A team put on a stellar performance against El Dorado on Dec. 16, winning by a final of 40-6. This win puts the Vikings at a 3-2 record on the season. Leading the Vikings in scoring was Isabella Hunt with 16 points. Taylor Byerley also had a great game, finishing with 12 points and shooting two for two from the three-point line. Bailey Phillips also played strong, scoring 10 points on the night. Marissa Ramirez was the only other Viking to score, adding in two points.

“The Lady Vikes outscored their opponents in all four quarters and played aggressively both offensively and defensively,” Swanson said. “We look to taking on Circle on Thursday, to finish off the first half of the season strong.”
