A team results
The first game of the season for the Winfield Middle School eighth grade girls squad was against Clearwater on Dec. 3. The Vikings won in convincing fashion, according to head coach Eric Swanson, with a score of 43-6 as they held the Indians scoreless the entire second half. Winfield was led in scoring by Isabella Hunt with 16 points. Taylor Byerley also had a big game, scoring nine points. Bailey Phillips added in six. Each player for the Vikings scored a basket and shared the ball well. Ashley Smith, Abby Cantrell, Marissa Ramirez, Kirstin Cummings and Brendetta Smith each put up points.
The next game, Dec. 5, was against Wellington. The Vikings didn’t fare as well, losing with a score of 42-16. Taylor Byerley scored six, while Isabella Hunt and Abby Cantrell each recorded four points.
Winfield took on Rose Hill Dec. 9, coming up short in a hard-fought game by a score of 27-20. Taylor Byerley scored six points, while Ashley Smith and Abby Cantrell each recorded four points.
The eighth grade A team took on Ark City Dec. 12 and came out victorious with a 38-36 overtime thriller. Ashley Smith hit the shot to tie the game up at 36 and then made the eventual game-winning basket in overtime. Marissa Ramirez finished with a team high 10 points. Abby Cantrell added seven and Isabella Hunt six, and Bailey Phillips and Ashley Smith both finished with five points each.
The eighth grade A team put on a stellar performance against El Dorado on Dec. 16, winning by a final of 40-6. This win puts the Vikings at a 3-2 record on the season. Leading the Vikings in scoring was Isabella Hunt with 16 points. Taylor Byerley also had a great game, finishing with 12 points and shooting two for two from the three-point line. Bailey Phillips also played strong, scoring 10 points on the night. Marissa Ramirez was the only other Viking to score, adding in two points.
“The Lady Vikes outscored their opponents in all four quarters and played aggressively both offensively and defensively,” Swanson said. “We look to taking on Circle on Thursday, to finish off the first half of the season strong.”
B team results
The eighth grade girl’s B team has also started off well to begin the season. The B team won a close game 12-10 against the Clearwater Indians on Dec. 3.
Mackenzie Minner led all scorers with six points, while Delia Soto, Bri Hulse and Madi Mugler all chipped in two points a piece.
The B team also won another close game against Wellington Dec. 5 with a score of 14-12. Delia Soto and Mackenzie Minner each scored four points to lead the Vikings and Bri Hulse, Adreinn Tovar and Madi Mugler each added two points.
The Vikings B team traveled to Rose Hill on Dec. 9 and suffered their first loss of the season with a score of 26-10. Delia Soto scored a game-high four points for the Vikings.
The fourth game of the season dropped the Lady Vikes to 2-2 on the season against Ark City on Dec. 12. The Bullpups beat the Vikings 32-13. Mackenzie Minner finished with four points, while Brendetta Smith hit a half-court shot just before half time.
The WMS eighth grade B team lost a close game to El Dorado by a score of 11-16. Mackenzie Minner finished with three points, while Bri Hulse, Delia Soto, Madi Mugler and Brendetta Smith all finished with two points each. The loss puts the Viking girls B team at a 2-3 record on the season.
