A spider allegedly was the cause of a minor-injury traffic accident that occurred just before 10 a.m. Sunday on East Madison Avenue, according to a press release from the Arkansas City Police Department.

Officers responded to a report of an accident in the westbound lane of the East Madison Avenue underpass and encountered a single vehicle lying on its side.

Its 23-year-old driver, Trevor Chaparro, Arkansas City, was conscious, but had to be extricated by the Arkansas City Fire-EMS Department.

Although he had blood on his head and face, the release states, he did not have any life-threatening or serious injuries and refused ambulance transport.

However, Chaparro was cited for no proof of insurance, no valid license plate and inattentive driving.

The release states Chaparro admitted to police that he caused the accident when he was attempting to kill a spider on his driver’s-side window with a cup.

He looked up and saw he was going to drive into the center supports of the underpass, the release states, but he was able to avoid hitting them straight on.

Instead, he clipped the edge of the supports and the truck flipped onto its side.

Exaggerated fears of spider jaws can lead to the need for the jaws of life to pull one from a wrecked car. Few spiders bite people, yet these little creatures impart hysteria. This driver now has many other concerns other than his fear of spiders.
