Participating in the Kansas Phi Beta Lambda 59th annual State Leadership Conference Feb. 25-26 in Emporia,  seven of Cowley College’s eight PBL students in attendance qualified to attend the National PBL Leadership Conference in Nashville, TN, which will be held July 9-12.

A ceremony was held Thursday, Feb. 25 in Cowley College’s McAtee Dining Center to induct 27 new members into the school’s Mu Alpha Theta organization.

Collecting coins to help fight against leukemia

OXFORD — Donating coins, a few at a time, earned Oxford students an afternoon away from school work and helped to save lives, too.

KDOT sponsoring ‘Sobriety Rocks’ scholarship competition

TOPEKA — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is sponsoring its fourth annual arts contest that encourages Kansas youth to resist pressure and abstain from drinking alcohol until reaching the legal age limit of 21.

Cowley student, KNEA-SP group implement community service program to assist local school

Cowley College education majors, active members of KNEA-SP, collaborated with Francis Willard Elementary School on a school improvement project. The project is an interdisciplinary reading program with classroom and parent activities based around children’s literature and will integrate physical education and visual art concepts. Donations received through various efforts and a grant of $1,000 from the National Education Association (NEA) Student Program's CLASS (Community Learning through America's Schools) Grant program will allow for the purchase supplies.

Students named to Washburn honor rolls

TOPEKA — Bryce S. Scott, Arkansas City, was named to the 4.0 GPA President’s Honor Roll for the fall semester at Washburn University.

Liebau graduates from Ft. Hays

HAYS — Andrew Walt Liebau of Cambridge received a bachelor of business administration in management at Fort Hays State University during the 2009 fall semester, according to a press release from the Fort Hays registrar’s office.

Sue Saia chosen to lead Kansas Community College Dean’s Leadership Council

Recognized for her ability to lead, Sue Saia, Cowley College’s vice president of student affairs, was recently selected to serve as the chairperson for the Kansas Community College Dean’s Leadership Council.

Carver named 2009-10 DAR Good Citizen

Abbie Noel Carver, Winfield High School senior, has been selected as the 2009-10 Good Citizen by the Peleg Gorton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Crain named Tyler Juden Memorial Scholarship winner

The winner of the Tyler Juden Memorial Scholarship for 2009 is Christopher Crain of Arkansas City. Christopher will get to attend an Adventure Camp at the National Rifle Association’s Whittington Center located in Raton, N.M., with all expenses paid through the memorial fund.

Applications being accepted for the Shively scholarship

Applications for the annual $500 Barbara J. Shively Memorial Scholarship may be obtained at the Burden United Methodist Church, 118 E. Sixth, Burden, KS 67019, or from Central High School in Burden. Anyone seeking post high school education is eligible.
