Builders hang in with MIAA foes

The Southwestern College men’s basketball team dropped a pair of exhibition games to Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern over the weekend at the Missouri Southern Classic in Joplin, Mo.

Southwestern fell to Pitt State 78-67 on Friday and Missouri Southern 100-67 Saturday.

Neither loss counted against Southwestern’s record, so the Builders remained at 3-4.

The Builders led Pitt State by as many as 13 points in the first half and trailed by just three at the half.


The Gorillas scored 16 of the first 25 points in the second half to open up a 53-43 lead with 12 minutes left.

Southwestern sank a trio of three-pointers in the closing minutes, but was unable to make a serious charge.

Pitt State, which opened the season with exhibition games against Kansas, Kansas State and UNLV, improved to 4-1.

Pitt State’s Rodney Grace was 8-11 from the field and led all scorers with 22 points. Spencer Magana was also in double-figures for the Gorillas with 17.

The Gorillas shot 26-49 (53.1 percent) from the field and outrebounded the Builders 41-25.

Southwestern shot an even 40 percent from the field but made only 8-28 three-pointers after connecting on their first five from behind the arc.


Three Builders reached double-figures led by senior Marcus Batiste with 16 points. Batiste scored 14 of Southwestern’s 16 points but had just two the rest of the way.

Senior guard Jason McCormack was 5-10 with 13 points. Stuart Ballard hit 5-6 shots to finish with 12.

Sophomore James Davis and senior Justin Diggles combined to go 5-23 with nine points apiece.

The Builders weathered a couple big runs by Missouri Southern but faded late in the second half.

After trailing by as many as 25 points in the first half, the Builders went on a 12-0 run and got the deficit down to seven (53-46) on a dunk by Travis Thurau with 15:46 left.

Missouri Southern charged back with a 22-3 run to open their largest of 26 points with 8:41 to go.

The Lions built as much as a 35 point lead in the final two minutes.

Missouri Southern shot 47.5 percent from the field and made 35-44 (79.5 percent) free throws. Southwestern attempted 29 fewer free throws and connected on just 6-15 (40 percent).

The Lions also crushed Southwestern on the boards 46-28.

Missouri Southern had four players reach double-figures led by Jason Adams with 23 points on 8-11 shooting. Skyler Bowlin scored 15. Keane Thomann and Travis Jones each had 11.

Ballard was the only Builder to reach double-figures with 13 points. Batiste and Brayden Crowe each had nine. Coy Potter and McCormack each had eight.

Southwestern concludes its pre-conference schedule tonight against Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Okla. at 7 p.m.
